Ingredients
- Scallops – You can use fresh sea scallops or frozen for this recipe. It using frozen you will need to thaw them first.
- Salted butter – Salted butter is great for adding a salty taste.
See the recipe card for quantities.
Keep in mind that I use minimal ingredients because I love the flavor of fresh scallops. If you want to add other seasonings or coatings, that’s totally fine! I give some simple suggestions below on options that many people love to use.
How to Make this Broiled Scallops Recipe
Step One: Preheat a skillet in the broiler for 5 minutes. Add butter.
Step Two: Once the butter is melted, add the scallops and return the pan to the broiler.
Step Three: Cook for 2 minutes, flip. Cook for another 2 minutes.
Step Four: Once the internal temperature of the scallops reaches 125 degrees, they’re done.
Top Tip💡
Plan on removing the scallops from the broiler once they reach an internal temperature of 115 degrees as they will continue to cook.
Substitutions
- Garlic butter sauce – Who says that you can’t use other kinds of butter with these scallops? You could also add fresh garlic to the butter to compliment that salty flavor.
Variations
- Seasonings – You can add garlic powder, black pepper, garlic salt, unsalted butter, Italian seasoning for an Italian twist, or any other seasonings to these fresh scallops.
- Bread crumb mixture – If you want to add some more golden brown goodness to the scallops, adding parmesan bread crumbs works well. It is best to brown them separately and then sprinkle on top. They might burn under the broiler.

Equipment
All that you need for this recipe is a skillet and tongs. So simple!
Storage
If you have leftover scallops, storing them in the fridge in an airtight container is the best way to store them. I will be honest, though – scallops are best eaten fresh, in my opinion. While you can save leftovers for later, it’s a hard feat to reheat them in a way that they won’t become rubbery and overcooked.
I always advise people to eat them fresh for the best flavor, taste, and texture.
Common Questions
You can use bay scallops or sea scallops of any size. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to use common sense when cooking them because the smaller ones will cook much quicker than the larger ones.
Anytime that I’ve made this recipe, I’ve used larger scallops because the smaller ones tend to cook too quickly for my liking.
Yes, you can use a shallow baking pan to cook scallops as long as it is ok with high heat. You’ll still want to use melted butter, and it won’t be as quick of a process, but many people choose to use the oven on high heat to cook scallops. You can then dip them into a butter mixture and enjoy – or pair them with your favorite side dish.
The directions on the package will tell you the best steps. most people will run them under cold water to thaw, as you want them to not be frozen when cooking them. I also recommend patting them dry with a clean paper towel as wet scallops don’t cook up well with this recipe. You want to use dry scallops that are thawed and ready.
