There are a lot of new things happening over on the shelves at Walmart. If you haven’t heard, Walmart recently announced the release of a private food brand called Bettergoods. It’s a collection of 300 high-quality items that will make “trend-forward” and “chef-inspired” food accessible for all customers. These items are a mix of high-quality culinary experiences (think Hot Honey Seasoning or Bronze Cut Pasta from Italy), plant-based products and their “Made Without” products that focus on specific dietary preferences, like gluten-free or no added sugar.
While these products are slowly being added to shelves throughout the next few months, I couldn’t help but make a trip over to Walmart to see what I could find from this new line. The items are minimal (I only found seven at my local Walmart so far), but from what I did get to taste, I can already guarantee you that these new Walmart groceries are certain to be a hit with customers. Here are four that I liked, and how I used them when I got home.
1. Cinnamon Honey Butter
This was one of the first Bettergoods items I saw on Walmart’s shelves, and I immediately added it to my cart. I’m so glad I did, too, because this Cinnamon Honey Butter is absolutely incredible. It’s just the thing I want for a sweet morning treat, like atop a piece of toast (no need to add cinnamon sugar) or slathered on pancakes or waffles. I also found that this butter was great for cooking French toast—slathering it on a slice before it hits the pan adds an extra oomph of flavor to the caramelized toast.
2. Plant-Based Cheddar & Mozzarella
I have yet to find a good plant-based cheese that actually works. In the past, bags of shredded plant-based cheese I’ve tried taste like cardboard. They also don’t melt well and, honestly, they leave me with a stomachache. And for someone who is lactose-intolerant like myself, avoiding a stomachache after eating cheese is kind of the whole point of eating a plant-based product in the first place.
Curious if Walmart’s Plant-Based Cheddar & Mozzarella was any better, I decided to sprinkle the cheese into my scrambled eggs one morning. I was pleasantly surprised at how easily this cheese melted, and how real it tasted. So much so that I fed it to my family and they had absolutely no idea that it was plant-based cheese. I ended up using this cheese in everything for the rest of the week, including homemade mac and cheese, quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches. I will definitely be buying it again.
3. Plant-Based Chocolate Oatmilk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert
While there haven’t been many plant-based shredded cheese options, there are always plenty of plant-based “ice cream” options to choose from. When I heard that Walmart was releasing a few different flavors of Bettergoods oatmilk-based frozen desserts—like their Chocolate Oatmilk Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert—I knew I needed to give them a try. Typically I go for a cashew-based nondairy “ice cream,” so already I was feeling skeptical. However, after trying it, I have never been happier to be proven wrong. The chocolate flavor was rich and creamy, like biting into a creamy mousse or a fudgy brownie. The texture was smooth and milky despite not having any dairy in it, and it didn’t have any weird aftertaste. I highly recommend grabbing this next time you’re craving a pint.
4. Plant-Based White Cheddar Style Macaroni and Cheeze
Compared to other boxed mac-and-cheese brands, this Plant-Based White Cheddar Style Macaroni and Cheeze came with a sauce packet instead of instructions to add butter and milk. (That’s a plus because using plant-based butter and milk can get expensive.) Thankfully this all-in-one mac and cheese boasts pasta that is high-quality and a sauce that tastes just like the real thing. While I do like to doctor up my mac and cheese with hot sauce and chicken (you could use a plant-based chicken, of course), I did find I enjoyed this variety of mac and cheese as-is. I would be happy grabbing it again if I saw it.
