This Buttermilk Ranch Dip is perfect for fresh veggies, pretzel bites, chicken wings, pizza, french fries, and anything else that you want to dip into it. It’s the best recipe to whip up when you want to add a pop of flavor to other foods. I love the taste of the natural flavors and the texture of this creamy dressing!
I’ve also used this homemade ranch dip for potato chips. Just a little bit goes a long way, and my taste buds agree that every bite packs a punch of flavor. Making your own dip is a delicious way to accompany food without completely taking it over.
One of the best things about this dip is that you can easily turn it into a simple ranch dressing recipe. Add a little more milk to thin it out, and just like that, you have an easy homemade dressing that you can drizzle over your bed of lettuce. Talk about a simple way to make your own buttermilk dressing!
Below, you’ll find two recipes: one is for the dip, and the other is for the dressing. There isn’t a huge difference between the two – so it’s a simple 2-for-1 bonus!

- Dried dill – For seasoning.
- Salt – For flavor.

How to Make Buttermilk Ranch Dip
Step One: Add all of the ingredients into a large mixing bowl.
Step Two: Stir until combined well.
Top Tip💡
If you prefer a thinner dressing, you just need to add liquid buttermilk in place of the buttermilk powder. I also start slow and add a little bit at a time because it’s easier to thin out slowly, then try to add back to thicken up.
Substitutions
- Seasonings – You can add black pepper, fresh chives, more fresh parsley, fresh dill, and any other fresh herbs or simple ingredients that you want.
- Plain Greek yogurt – Instead of sour cream, use Greek yogurt for this dip recipe. You’ll get the same creamy texture and flavor but with a good boost of protein!
Variations
- Spice it up – A pinch of cayenne pepper added to this delicious homemade dressing is a great way to add some heat to your raw veggies and green salad.
- Dressing – Swap out the buttermilk powder for real buttermilk (or milk mixed with white vinegar). This will thin out the texture a bit.

Equipment
To make this homemade buttermilk ranch dressing or dip recipe, you just need measuring cups and a mixing bowl. Also, an airtight container or mason jar with a lid for storage.
Storage
Once this homemade ranch dip is made, keep it stored in a sealable container and store it in the fridge. The only thing to remember is that you should never put a dirty spoon or utensil into the dip or dressing to scoop some out as that will put saliva and bacteria into the dressing, making it spoil quicker.
Common Questions
I’m all about cutting up green peppers, carrots, red bell peppers, sliced cucumbers, and even drizzling on top of garden-fresh tomatoes. The flavor of the ranch seasoning pairs really well with just about any vegetable.
I think so! Not only do I prefer them over bottled dressings from the store, but I just feel that they have a fresher taste that actually compliments foods rather than overpowers them. This homemade ranch is one of my favorites!
You can. Just stir, and store. I like to make this a day in advance so that it gives the ingredients time to mesh together in the fridge. Plus, I’m a big fan of chilled dip and cold dressing, so it works out perfectly. Just be sure that you store it in a sealed container so that it doesn’t take on scents from the fridge.
