Samsung Recalls Over 1 Million Ranges Due To Potential Fire Hazard

Samsung announced a voluntary recall of over 1 million electric ranges. The recall comes after hundreds of reports came in regarding front-mounted range knobs being activated when bumped by humans or pets. The unintentional action caused the ranges to turn on, posing a potential fire hazard.

The press release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) stated that there have been approximately 250 fires involving the ranges, and nearly twenty caused extensive damage. It’s estimated that around 40 injuries have been reported from the fires and several instances have resulted in pet deaths.

Which Ranges Are Recalled?

The recall affects Samsung Electric Slide-In Ranges sold at major appliance stores across the U.S., including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowes, and the Samsung website from May 2013 through August 2024.

You can find the model number of your range by looking inside the upper left corner of the oven door. Alternatively, the number may be listed inside the oven’s bottom storage bin.

What To Do if You Have a Recalled Samsung Range

Those who purchased the affected models can receive free knob locks or covers by placing a request through the Samsung website, where you can also find estimated shipping times and video installation guides.

Customers may continue to use their range until the safety accessories arrive but should exercise additional caution by checking ranges before leaving the house and before bed to ensure they are off. Customers with WiFi-enabled range tops are encouraged to turn on notifications so they will be alerted whenever a burner is activated.

Additionally, the CPSC urges customers to avoid kitchen fires by keeping stovetops clear when not in use, storing certified fire extinguishers in the kitchen, ensuring smoke alarms are working, and preventing accidental activation by kids or pets by always using safety locks on range knobs.
