What goes on a patty melt? Traditionally, the sandwich is made with rye bread, a burger patty, Swiss cheese, and fried onions. The bread is grilled, similar to a grilled cheese sandwich, making it a cross between a hamburger and a grilled cheese. And, like all sandwiches, you can customize a patty melt with endless additions and substitutions. In fact, that’s how Five Guys customers have been creating their version of a patty melt. They just order a grilled cheese sandwich and an individual burger patty and assemble the sandwich later. This has become such a popular menu hack that Five Guys has added it to the regular menu, and it seems that it may be more affordable than the hack itself.
Five Guys New Patty Melt
Five Guys made the big announcement of its new Patty Melt on Instagram. “We saw how much our fans love the Patty Melt menu hack, so we decided to make it official! Now available everywhere! If you don’t see it on the menu in your store, just ask the crew for a Patty Melt!” the Instagram caption read.
According to the Five Guys website, the Patty Melt features “a burger patty in between slices of American-style cheese melted on a toasted, inside-out sesame seed bun with toppings of your choice.”
Not all locations currently offer the Patty Melt for order, but we did find one location in North Carolina where it’s already on the menu for $8.39. A grilled cheese at the exact location costs $6.09, and an additional patty costs $3.10. That means a hacked patty melt at the North Carolina location would cost $9.19, which is 80 cents more than the menu’s official Patty Melt offering.
While some customers are excited about the new item, some were quick to point out how the Five Guys version is far from a classic patty melt. “Have y’all actually ever had a patty melt? Because this ain’t that,” wrote one person. Another commenter said, “Not a patty melt without grilled onions and rye bread.”
While it’s true you can’t get rye bread or Swiss cheese at Five Guys, you can add grilled onions at no additional charge, which would get you something pretty close to the traditional recipe. Or, add all the toppings that you want, we never judge someone’s way of topping their sandwich!
