Since moving out to the South, I’ve witnessed firsthand just how a bit of Southern charm can change your food into the most mouthwatering thing ever. From savory mains to sweet desserts, there's something for everyone. And the pride of Tennessee herself, Ms. Dolly Parton, knows a thing or two about that good ol’ Southern charm.
Dolly has showcased this through a wide range of recipes and even with her beloved baking mixes and cookware. Now, there’s another recipe from the country star herself that you might want to add to your list of things to try. While she has plenty of recipes that are near and dear to her heart, this special apple dessert is just plain ol' Southern comfort in one bite.

Southern fried apples are an easy way to sneak some sweetness into your meals. It’s a staple comfort food made by cooking apples in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon until they’re nice and tender. Of course, to get the full experience, you’ll want to make sure you cook them in a Dolly-branded cast iron skillet.
How to Make Dolly Parton's Southern Fried Apples
According to the original recipe page, this special side dish is perfect to pair with Parton's beloved mac and cheese (she released a frozen version earlier this year). It would work nicely with pork chops, baked ham, or even grilled chicken as well.
It can also serve as a simple dessert when topped with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Or you can add it to your morning oatmeal, for that matter. There's never a bad time for these Southern fried apples.
Dolly's Southern fried apples are quite easy to make, and most of the work is in the apple prep. First, you’ll peel and slice about six apples, preferably of the Granny Smith variety. Then, melt butter in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat. Stir in a brown sugar and cinnamon mixture, pour in the apples, and stir to coat the mixture. Finally, cook the apples for about 10 to 15 minutes until they’re nice and soft, stirring occasionally. Once they’re done, serve warm and dig in—just be careful not to burn yourself.
While the recipe we have on our site uses white sugar, Dolly opts for brown. And that's another great thing about this recipe—you can customize it to your heart's content; add some spices, toasted nuts, dried cranberries, or whatever else you desire.
