Trader Joe’s Now Has the Scottish Dessert I Usually Have to Fill My Suitcase With

If there is one thing I’ve learned from living in Scotland for the past three months, it’s that shortbread is worth the hype. Admittedly, shortbread initially didn’t seem like the most outstanding dessert to me—it sounded too simple to be worth giving much thought. Then, my friend Yana convinced me otherwise. She introduced me to the marvelous combination of shortbread and chocolate and I’m now forever changed.

The best part of shortbread is its simplicity. On their own, shortbread cookies are perfectly buttery with just a little hint of sweetness. They are soft enough to be crumbly, but crispy enough that when you take a bite, you get a satisfying snap. While you really can’t go wrong with any kind of shortbread, one of my favorite brands is Walker’s. Beyond just normal butter shortbread fingers, they have a variety of flavors and shapes, from Scottie dogs to Christmas trees. Walk down any street in Edinburgh and it’s hard not to run into a store selling Walker’s.

I was fully prepared to bring an entire suitcase full of shortbread and chocolate back to the United States for my friends and family. But, lucky for me, I now don’t have to, because a beloved U.S. grocery store is here to save the day.

Walker’s Shortbread Has Returned to Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s/Allrecipes

According to the Trader Joe’s website, importing Walker’s to its stores has become a yearly tradition for the grocery store chain. Last year, Trader Joe’s sold an assortment of different Walker’s flavors. This year, it will only offer only one variety: Walker’s Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel Shortbread. It’s almost as if TJ’s foresaw my arrival back in the U.S. and had to make sure my favorite cookies were on shelves for my long-awaited return!

As someone who already enjoys shortbread with chocolate, this news couldn’t be more exciting. Instead of buying two different treats, I only need to get one, plus I get to enjoy a little hint of salted caramel with every bite.

If you are looking for a treat to buy your loved ones—or yourself—this holiday season, look no further than your nearest Trader Joe’s. The cookies will be available for a limited time through the holidays, so I’d suggest stocking up. While I had to travel all the way to Scotland to discover this treat, luckily, you don’t have to.
