This Controversial Hot Dog Topping Has the Internet Divided

Summer cookouts are synonymous with grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for your friends and family. But, just like the Fourth of July has you craving a hot dog, so does any Costco run. 

No one can deny that the $1.50 hot dog combo deal at Costco is one of the best food deals in existence. While we can officially breathe easier knowing that the buck-fifty hot dog and drink combo is safe under Costco’s new CFO, it seems some Costco shoppers have a new bone to pick with the wholesale club.

Yes, Costco finally brought back its diced onions after a multi-year pandemic hiatus; however, some customers are still not pleased with the condiment bar, which includes ketchup, mustard, and relish.

“Bringing my own mayo from home 4 my costco hot dog because 4 some reason costco still hasn’t put mayo in their condiments section,” TikTok user @anabelmadrigal posted.

The video shows them squirting a homemade piping-style plastic bag filled with mayonnaise onto a ketchup- and mustard-topped hot dog. Since it was uploaded in May, the video has amassed hundreds of thousands of views and, of course, thousands of comments regarding the topping choice.

“Because who’s putting mayo on a hot dog,” one commenter asked. 

“Mayo on a hot dog is elite,” said another.

Does Mayo Belong on Hot Dogs? The Internet Is Divided

This isn’t the first time the internet has gotten into the controversial debate. Last summer, a Reddit user posted a photo of a hot dog topped with mayo and ketchup with the caption, “Where my Mayo on a hot dog gang at.”

Hundreds of comments flooded in discussing the combo—and also poking fun at the user for cutting a hot dog in half and serving it on a hamburger bun. Again, they were divided between people finding the combination disgusting and others claiming it’s the only way to eat a hot dog.

“Mayo and ketchup are the superior hot dog condiments,” a user responded. 

Some users began sharing their favorite ways to eat dogs—beyond your traditional toppings bar options. A few said they add melted American cheese, others said barbecue sauce, and one user even mentioned slathering peanut butter on a hot dog.

Sure, mayo is always a hot-button condiment, but the fact that a 2021 survey said 19 percent of people add it to their hot dogs isn’t that surprising. Almost every region has a different favorite hot dog topping—from New York Coneys to Seattle cream cheese dogs. What is more surprising is the fact that Costco doesn’t offer mayo to its customers. 

But, after the viral TikTok, that might be about to change. Not because Costco is getting a mayo dispenser, though, but because Hellmann’s is stepping up to the plate with a new invention.

It’s safe to say carrying around a baggie full of mayonnaise might not be the best innovation, so Hellmann’s plans to create a pocket-sized mayo dispenser for all those moments when you need a flavor boost. From the ballpark to the picnic basket, you’ll soon be able to safely carry extra mayo for any occasion.

Hellmann’s says it plans to create the dispenser sometime this summer, but it’s still early days. So, while we wait for our own emergency mayo stash, remember to think of those mayo lovers while you’re putting together your toppings bar.
