General Mills Is Bringing Back This Fan-Favorite Item From the ’60s

Most of us have a favorite cereal from our childhoods. For me, many mornings were accompanied by a bowl of Cap’n Crunch or Lucky Charms—which also made for many quick afternoon snacks. Nowadays, when I have cereal, it feels like a delicious, nostalgic treat. But what happens when the cereal we knew and loved gets discontinued? That’s what happened to General Mills’ Twinkles cereal.

After a stint in the 1960s, the cereal got pulled from the Genera Mills lineup in 1973. For those who knew and loved the iconic star-shaped cereal, you’re in luck. General Mills is taking its fans on a journey back to the cereal aisles of the 1960s and launching Twinkles anew.

The Return of Twinkles Cereal

The star-shaped corn cereal, made with vanilla and butter cookie flavors, was a fan favorite back in the day. Its iconic mascot was a magical elephant whose name was, of course, Twinkles. The cereal was known for its stories of Twinkles and his friends, which appeared in the back of the box.

The new Twinkles release still features its vintage packaging and elephant mascot, but there will no longer be stories. Rather, this retro cereal’s updated, modernized version will feature a game on the back of the box. The release is slated for December, so keep an eye out for this unique box at Walmarts nationwide.

General Mills’ Friends Cereal

General Mills isn’t just appealing to 1960s kids with its nostalgic release. It’s also courting 1990s TV fans with an all-new cereal that coincides with the 30th anniversary of one of the most popular comedies ever.

Inspired by the beverage that fueled Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Ross, and Joey for 10 seasons, the new Friends Cereal is a limited-edition crunchy, flaked cereal, flavored with hints of coffee and vanilla. Like the Twinkles, this one will also contain a game on the back of the box. We won’t tell you exactly what that game is, but we’ll give you one hint: It involves a couch. And not the one found at Central Perk.
