FDA Announces Nationwide Recall of Broccoli, Carrots, and More Veggies Due to E. Coli Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice on Dec. 2 for multiple brands of vegetables and whole carrots associated with the Grimmway Farms recall in November. This new list comes from 4Earth Farms of Commerce, California, a distributor that sells packaged vegetable medleys to grocery stores, including Walmart, Albert’s Organics, and Sprouts Farmers Market, among others.

The voluntary recall was initiated by 4Earth Farms when it became aware that the Grimmway Farms carrots used in its line of mixed veggies were potentially contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli bacteria. This expansion comes after other products containing Grimmway Farms produce were also recalled out of an abundance of caution.

The following packages are specified in the latest recall:

Customers should not be at risk of buying these affected vegetables, as they have been expired for at least three weeks, with best-by dates ranging from Sept. 7, 2024, to Nov. 2, 2024. However, the FDA is encouraging consumers to check refrigerators or freezers for any remaining produce from the recall list. Dispose of the packages and sanitize any surfaces they may have touched, as E. coli is a serious matter. If you have concerns about exposure to the bacteria, contact a medical professional.

E. coli’s incubation period can vary from less than 24 hours to 10 days, so if you’ve consumed these products in that space of time, be on the lookout for symptoms that include stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and high fever.

4Earth Farms says that it has not been contacted about any illnesses resulting from consuming its products. The wider Grimmway Farms outbreak has thus far been linked to 39 illnesses, including 15 hospitalizations and one death.

Consumers with questions about the recall should contact 4Earth Farms at 855-918-1706, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT.
